Description
In 1894 Cyrus Reed Teed arrived in Estero Florida with his followers. The Koreshan Unity, as they were known, had come to Florida to establish "New Jerusalem". They believed that the entire universe existed within a hollow sphere. They built several buildings to create their own little town and imported some exotic plants for their little Utopia. At its peak in the early twentieth century the compound boasted 250 residents, though there were some 4,000 followers around the country. New Jerusalem began to fall apart once Teed died in 1908. While some followers believed he would be resurrected, that hope faded as his body decayed.
The site was turned over to the state in Florida by the four remaining followers. Today the site has eleven buildings, hiking trails, boating and camping. This shot is of some of the ruins on the site.
David Koresh, leader of his own cult took his name from this group.
