Description
The current Egmont Key Lighthouse was built in 1858. there is some controversy as to whether this was a new lighthouse, or if the old one had been moved ninety feet to its current location. At any rate the lighthouse has a storied history. Legend has it that a hurricane flooded the entire island and the original lighthouse keeper and his family survived by climbing into a small boat tied to a palmetto tree. When the storm subsided the keeper rowed across the bay, resigned and never returned. Today the island is subject to beach erosion that has killed a great number of the trees along the bay side of the island. The dock in this shot is no longer safe for boats to use. Egmont Key and its lighthouse sit at the mouth of Tampa Bay.
