Description
Florida’s sea cows are large aquatic mammals that can weigh over 800 pounds. Technically they are West Indian Manatees. They can grow to weigh over 1,000 pounds, live about 60 years and inhabit the rivers, coastal waters of the state. These herbivores have no natural enemies though humans are responsible for many manatee deaths every year. Currently their biggest threat is starvation due to loss of habitat and the sea grass vital to their diet.
This manatee is munching on some lettuce put into the water as a substitute for sea grass. Florida marine experts have started experimental feeding of manatees in the wild in an effort to save the species which is currently listed as threatened. He seems to be offering me apiece of his snack. Of course I could not accept as bothering the beasts is illegal.
