Description
About 90% of all sea turtle nests can be found on Florida beaches. Nesting season is long, lasting from April to October. The turtles make their way onto the beach at night to find a suitable spot to dig a hole and lay their eggs. The babies will hatch in about60 days and find their way to the water.
Unfortunately human actions can interfere with this life cycle. Bright lights disorient the hatchlings that are naturally attracted to the moonlight reflecting off the water. Sand castles, discarded beach chairs and other trash can entangle both the adult and baby turtles.
Do your part by filling in holes, knocking down sandcastles and take trash with you when leaving the beach. If you live near the coast use turtle friendly outdoor lights or better yet none at all.
Leave them in the dark to help the babies find their way.
