Description
Built by the Spanish in 1742, Fort Matanzas saw an attack before the welcome mat was even laid out. The purpose of the fort was to protect the Matanzas inlet, a backdoor of sorts to the city of St Augustine. Twelve British ships appeared at the inlet and the fort responded with cannon fire. The British turned away. This was the last time the fort would see action. Today it is part of the National Park system and is open to tourists after extensive renovation.
It is one of only two forts in the world built of coquina, a lime stone common to the area.
