Description
The Charlotte Harbor Northern Railroad was built to provide a supply route for phosphate mines in florida;s interior to the port on the southern tip of Gasparilla Island on the state's west coast. The port was closed in 197 and the railway no longer had a purpose and was abandoned in 1981.
The only portions of the railway still in existence are the bridges that crossed Gasparilla Sound. Both ends at land's edge have been turned into fishing piers. This is just beyond the northern pier. The tower served a bascule bridge that has disappeared over the years.
