Description
Florida’s Sunshine Skyway Bridge is an icon for locals and visitors alike. The huge span connects Manatee and Pinellas counties. Millions of vehicles cross the bridge each year and it leaves a lasting impression on all who cross. This is the view of the bridge from Fort DeSoto Park, a county park in Pinellas County.
The Bob Graham Sunshine Skyway Bridge, it’s official name, replaces the original double span bridge that was built in 1954. A freighter struck the bridge in 1980 bringing down one span and killing 35 people. This span, a cable-stayed bridge, was open to traffic in 1987. Drivers are required to pay a toll to cross the bridge. Portions of the old bridge now serve as fishing piers.
