Description
On the western shore of Matanzas Bay the Castillo de San Marcos was built in the seventeenth century by the Spanish to protect the city of St Augustine. It is the oldest masonry fort in the continental United States and one of only two forts in the world built with coquina, a form of lime stone. It became Fort St Mark when the British took control of Florida and Fort Marion when the United State took control. Today it is a National Park and is again known as Castillo de San Marcos and the Spanish history of the structure is emphasized.
