Description
Lionfish are venomous fish native to areas of the Pacific and Indian Oceans. Sometime during the 20th century they were introduced into the Caribbean and western Pacific where they are considered an invasive species. The brightly colored fish (a defensive warning that they are venomous) is a hazard for divers and fishermen as the poisonous spines do produce enough venom to affect humans. It is very rare that a lionfish sting would cause death, but it is not unheard of especially in small children and the elderly. Those with allergies on weak immune systems are also at risk.
The fish like to hang out on reefs and rocky areas and prey on small fish and mollusks. Their unusual appearance and bright colors make them a favorite for aquariums.
