Construction on Castillo San Felipe del Morro began in 1539. The fort, known locally as simply "El Morro" was designed to protect the Bay of San Juan from attack. Over the years additions were made to stay current with modern technology. In 1898, during the Spanish-American War the United States bombarded the fort, destroying the lighthouse. The treaty ending the war forced Spain to sede Puerto Rico, and seveeral other islands, to the United States. The fort and several government buildings became Fort Brooks and a new lighthouse was built in 1908. The fort fired the United State's first shots of World War I when it fired on an armed German supply ship that was attempting to leave San Juan to supply German submarines in 1915. El Morro became a National Park in 1961 and was declared a World Heritage Site in 1983 by the United Nations. Today it is a popular tourist destination.
My true passion is photography. Since I am not good at drawing or painting photography really lets my creative side loose. Originally from Rochester, New York, I've called Florida home for almost 40 years. Other interests include hiking, traveling and especially cruising. These activities are always finding me new things to photograph. My photographic philosophy is to show people things they pass everyday but never notice. I look forward to your feedback as I am still growing as a photographer and will never be done learning.
