Artist's Description
was the most successful amateur golfer ever in both national and international tournaments and is considered by many to be one of the most influential characters in sports history. He helped design and founded the Augusta National Golf Club and was a co-founder of the Masters Torunament.
Jones was a lawyer which is why he only competed as an amateur and he retired from golf at age 28 though he continued to earn money from the sport as an instructor and designer of equipment. He did come out of retirement for a short time playing his last round of golf at the East Lake Golf Club in his hometown of Atlanta.
He started using the name “Bobby” so as not to be confused with Robert Trenton Jones, a golf course designer he sometimes worked with.
His final resting place is in Atlanta’s famed Oakland Cemetery. Many visitors to his grave leave golf balls, so many so that the staff clears them out every couple months so the grass on his grave does not die.
About Robert Wilder Jr
My true passion is photography. Since I am not good at drawing or painting photography really lets my creative side loose. Originally from Rochester, New York, I've called Florida home for almost 40 years. Other interests include hiking, traveling and especially cruising. These activities are always finding me new things to photograph. My photographic philosophy is to show people things they pass everyday but never notice. I look forward to your feedback as I am still growing as a photographer and will never be done learning.
