Description
Mangroves are an integral part of the Florida ecology. They provide a habitat for oysters, slow water flow and prevent erosion. They also help prevent damage from storm surge created by tropical storm systems.
They can be found along many waterways across the state of Florida. Because of their root systems, and the fact that they grow in salt water, it is very difficult to hike through mangroves. This is where boardwalks, such as this one in the Weeden Island Preserve come in handy. They allow visitors to walk through a mangrove swamp. It is a rare opportunity to see the bushes up close.
In this pic, taken from an observation tower, a Duke Energy plant and the skyline of Tampa is visible on the horizon. Don’t expect to see any details that far away. Heat waves make the city look like a mirage, almost ghostly.
