Legend has it that Gasparilla Island is named for famous pirate Jose Gaspar. However, this is merely flight of fancy initiated by a hotel on the island designed to attract more tourists. In the early twentieth century a railway was built to connect the island to the mainland. After the dredging of Charlotte Harbor the island became an important port for the phosphate industry. after the dredging of Tampa Bay, the piers fell into disuse and are now just tourist photo ops. This is a view from under one of the abandoned structures.
My true passion is photography. Since I am not good at drawing or painting photography really lets my creative side loose. Originally from Rochester, New York, I've called Florida home for almost 40 years. Other interests include hiking, traveling and especially cruising. These activities are always finding me new things to photograph. My photographic philosophy is to show people things they pass everyday but never notice. I look forward to your feedback as I am still growing as a photographer and will never be done learning.
