Description
This is Tampa's first public library. It was built in 1917 thanks, in part, to a $50,000 grant from Andrew Carnegie.
IIt served as Tampa's main library for almost fifty years. The city’s growth led to the need for more and larger libraries.
At the time of its construction it was capable of serving 50,000 patrons, but by the 1960's Tampa had grown to well over 200,000 residents. Longer hours were not the answer and in 1968 the library closed as a new main library was built.
Today the county uses the building for administrative offices.
The library was put on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 1991.
The building is located in Tampa Heights, just a short walk from the end of Tampa's Riverwalk.
