Description
Hidden within the borders of the Myakka State Park is a preserve. This area has limited access and no private motor vehicles are allowed. To get here you have to hike. Much of the preserve is Florida prairie which means few trees and almost no shade. On a hot summer day this hike can be brutal. My destination was Deep Hole, one of the lower lakes in the park. I spent half a day out there without ever seeing another person, the tire ruts serving as a trail the only vestige of humans.Because the area has so few visitors, the wildlife is hard to spot except from a distance. I caught glimpses of a white tail deer as it bounded away through the heavy brush and a single feral hog that hid in the brush before taking off to join the others I could hear.
