Description
Providence Canyon ?State Park is in western Georgia just outside Lumpkin close to the /Alabama border. The canyons were formed thanks to poor farming practices. Because of the sandy soil the region was known for cotton farming and farmers clear cut acreage for cotton fields To compound the issue of erosion plowing was often done up and down the hills rather that across them.
As the canyons grew they threatened the homes and businesses in the community that had grown in the area. The local government knew they had to do something and their solution came in the 1930’s and 40’s when the Civilian Conservation Corp began to plant kudzu to slow or stop the erosion. Problem was the Japanese import would strangle all other plant life. Son the pine trees began to die and the erosion grew worse. Anyone that has hiked in an area where pines are prevalent can tell you that they have a lot of roots and it was the pines that were actually fighting the erosion.
This lone pine has lost its fight to stay alive and even in death one can see how its roots have held the clay in place. Soon it will fall into the canyon taking with it another pice of the canyon rim.
Erosion continues to affect the canyons and within a few years this will be a different place.
