Description
At one time the south end of Gasparilla island, on Florida's southwest coast, was a busy phosphate port. Ships loaded and unloaded off the shore in docks built for the purpose. A railway ferried materials to and from the mainland. As other ports in Tampa Bay and Manatee County became more popular the phosphate industry moved away from the island. Florida Power and Light built some oil tanks in the area, Now those are gone too. Sections of both the docks and railway still stand, but not used for their original purpose.
