Description
This view of the Myakka State Forest in North Port, Florida is a great example of the effects of fire on the environment. The ground cover is primarily palmettos. Within days after the fire they are green and growing. The trees are blackened but relatively unharmed. Slash pines have adapted to wildfires so they have very few low branches. This protects them and helps slow the spread of fires.
This fire was prescribed meaning it was set on purpose to help clear the underbrush. This serves two purposes. It helps control wildfires by removing a lot of the fuel and it also encourages new growth.
