Description
Built in 1901 the Jackson Rooming House was one of just a few places in Tampa, Florida where blacks could stay during the segregation years. Artists such as James Brown, Ella Fitzgerald and Ray Charles stayed here while performing in the city’s nightclubs back in the day.
The house closed down in 1989 and, despite being placed on the National Register of Historic Places, has fallen into disrepair. It now stands alone in a parking lot, the last privately owned residential property in the city of Tampa. The Jackson House Foundation is trying to raise funds to save this historic landmark, but the future looks dim.
