Description
The Gasparilla Lighthouse was originally built in Lewes, Delaware in 1885. Erosion caused the light to be decommissioned in 1918. It was later taken down and rebuilt on Gasparilla Island in 1927 but was not put into service until 1932.
The light was the rear range with the front range about a mile offshore. The front range no longer exists, but the rear range is still in use. In fact, thanks to the efforts of the Barrier Island Parks Society one can actually climb the 105 foot tower. I did just that on the day I took this photo. For years I was only able to photograph it from the road.
