Description
Construction of Fort Zachery Taylor, in Key West, Florida, began in 1845. Several problems slowed construction which continued into the 1860's. During the US Civil War the fort was captured by Union Forces and was used to blockade southern ports, cutting off supplies meant for Confederate forces. The fort remained active through World War I and II. In 1973 it was declared a National Historic Landmark. Today it is a State park and is open to visitors.
