Description
In 1841, during the Second Seminole Indian War, an Army post was established on Peace Creek in south central Florida. This camp became known as Fort Ogden. The camp commander Colonel Worth, invited a Seminole leader, Hospetarko and some of his followers to the camp to barter. The government had been trying to get the Seminoles to give up the reservation in Florida given to them by the government. When the old chief again refused to leave, Worth kidnapped them and carted them off to Arkansas.
When the war ended the fort turned into a community. The tiny town grew slowly, but never became much more than a quick stop on the railway. The Post Office was established in 1876.
