Description
Florida’s manatees, or sea cows, are large aquatic mammals that can weigh over 800 pounds. They live about 60 years and inhabit the rivers, marshes and coastline waters. These herbivores have no natural enemies though humans are responsible for many manatee deaths every year. Their biggest threat is starvation due to loss of habitat and the sea grass vital to their diet.
This manatee is munching on some lettuce put into the water as a substitute for sea grass. Florida marine experts have started experimental feeding of manatees in the wild in an effort to save the species which is currently listed as threatened.
