Description
An empty beach in Venice, Florida is unusual. Even on the coldest of winter days there are usually tourists looking for shells. This photo was taken on a Saturday afternoon in October. You can see the clouds were beginning to build, but that is nothing out of the ordinary. Most summer afternoons include storm clouds and rain. What has kept the beach clear of visitors is Red Tide. This is an algae that cuts off oxygen in the waters and can result in fish kills. This bloom was a strong one and the shoreline was covered with dead fish. Red Tide creates a choking odor that can lead to breathing difficulties. that, combined with the smell of dead fish was just too much for even tourists to contend with.
