Description
Atlanta’s Oakland Cemetery was established in 1850 when city officials bought 6 acres of ground. When the Civil War rolled around this was not nearly enough room and the graveyard grew to over 40 acres.
In 1866 the city set aside 5 acres of the cemetery for African-American burials. Prior to this blacks were buried in “Slave Square”. This was the only place in the cemetery where blacks could be buried until segregation ended in 1963. Over the years more than 12,000 blacks have been laid to rest here.
